Although Ayurveda is an ancient medicine originating from India, its knowledge and legacy faded into history for many years due to social and socioeconomic conditions that influenced a shift away from what could have been the answer to the balance between body, mind, and soul that humanity had long sought. Now, with the rise of a new era filled with information, the desire to preserve youth, and the constant pursuit of well-being and fulfillment, this medicine has returned with greater power. People of various nationalities have embraced its benefits to such an extent that they have incorporated it as their faith and part of their daily routines — at least that was my perception of what I found in Rishikesh, India.
Rishikesh, located in the north of the world's most populous country and also known as "the Yoga Capital," is a city that welcomes thousands of foreigners each year, all seeking to learn holistic techniques that bring balance to the self. It’s no surprise that Rishikesh (as the locals call it, “Rishi”) not only exudes "good vibes," as seen on the flyers plastered around the city, but is also steeped in mysticism. Here, not only do the locals offer their courses, but foreigners also pay a significant amount of money to train with the best gurus in India.
It was then that I decided to learn about Ayurveda medicine, or at least take a glance at why so many courses were being offered in local homes. But perhaps there was one image on a flyer that completely captivated me. I remember the image vividly: it was of a woman holding an essential oil, surrounded by nature and spices, giving a massage to someone. That’s when I said to myself... I want to know more about this!
I have always felt called to connect with nature, whether through codes, colors, or the channeled messages I sometimes receive. That’s why discovering a technique that values plants as teachers and healers meant so much to me as part of my personal journey.
In this blog, I’ll explain the basic concepts of this system and some of its benefits.
Ayurveda is a holistic system that uses nutrition, the power of plants, exercise, meditation, and ancient Indian philosophy to promote health and prevent disease in humans. Perhaps the most well-known term within this system is the Doshas, which are essentially the divine energy manifested in every living being and environment, intimately connected with the elements (air, ether, earth, water, fire). There are three main doshas: Vata, Kapha, and Pitta. For example, Vata is the combination of the air and ether elements, responsible for movement and thought, and is associated with lightness and dryness/cold. Pitta, its opposite, is composed of water and fire and is linked to qualities of brightness and heat. Finally, Kapha, a blend of earth and water elements, is associated with density, slowness, and strength.
But these energies not only shape the external environment and the anatomy of beings, they also influence human physiology. Each person is endowed with a unique combination of these energies, with one being more prominent than the others, greatly influencing aspects of their personality, including physical, mental, and emotional characteristics.
For example, a person with a predominantly Vata Dosha tends to be creative, quick-minded, with fine hair and a slim build. Another person with a pronounced Pitta Dosha is usually determined, has sensitive skin, is passionate, impulsive, and is generally a natural leader. Finally, a person with predominantly Kapha characteristics tends to have a heavy build, is slow, calm, and has a stable mind. If you want to learn more about the Doshas and discover which type you have based on your characteristics and physical signs, you can take the online test completely for free.
Now, there are multiple benefits of this medicine for humans. I will describe below three of the most important ones:
*At a mental level, the use of Brahmi and Gotu Kola (known as centella asiatica in Latin America) has been scientifically shown to improve concentration and generate clarity. Of course, the technique Shirodhara, one of the most well-known Ayurvedic massages, is based on the infusion and pouring of warm oil directly onto the center of the forehead, which is used to promote deep relaxation, improve sleep quality, and balance the nervous system.
*At an emotional level, one of the adaptogenic herbs (plants with properties that help humans resist and adapt to both physical and chemical stress) is Ashwagandha, or Bufera, as it is known in Latin America. According to verified scientific studies, this plant has anxiolytic properties that reduce cortisol levels in the body. Of course, the practice of yoga and meditation, also used in Ayurvedic medicine, promotes emotional balance
*At a physical level, Ayurvedic medicine places great emphasis on natural nutrition, and by understanding the properties of foods, one can balance the Doshas. Through personalized diets based on your Dosha reading, not only is physical balance achieved, but the energetic body is also stabilized.
In summary, Ayurveda, with its holistic and ancestral approach, offers us valuable tools to achieve balance between body, mind, and soul. Through practices that integrate conscious eating, the use of medicinal herbs, meditation, and yoga, we can discover a path to a fuller and more harmonious life.
